Melissa Richardson's 19 years in public education have focused on elementary and middle school education. She was an elementary general education teacher for 16 years teaching grades Pre-K -fifth. She taught middle school for three years, grades sixth - eighth. In 2008, she became the AVID Elective teacher/Coordinator for Enfield Middle School. She served as School Improvement Chairperson and successfully lead the SACS Accreditation process at Enfield Middle School in 2011.

In 2011, she received the distinct honor of being elected Teacher of the Year for Enfield Middle School. Her teaching qualities were further validated when she represented Halifax County Schools in the North Carolina Regional Teacher of the Year competition that same year.. During 2011, she engaged in professional development with her colleagues sharing AVID strategies and helping teachers implement those strategies in their classrooms.

Melissa was chosen by her superintendent to participate in NELA (Northeast Leadership Academy) during the spring of 2010 as a result of her leadership skills in her classroom. The opportunity of becoming a school principal is one she has always dreamed. She is currently serving as Assistant Principal at Aurelian Springs Elementary School in the Halifax County School District, where she serves as testing coordinator, transportation supervisor, and instructional leader.

She resides in Whitakers, North Carolina with her husband Kelly and three children.
